Gen Surayud Chulanond, powerful Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army (1998-2002), was laid off during Thaksin Shinawatra's administration(2001- 2006). Four years after, with Thaksin out of power following the 19 September coup, he was invited by coup leader Sondhi Boonyaratglin to head the new administration.
