The Shan State Army "South" of Col Yawdserk captured nearly 300,000 speed pills across the border from Chiangmai's Wiang Haeng District yesterday (4 February), after an ambush staged by one of its crack units, according to rebel sources.
Lt-Col Khurh-ngern, Deputy Commander of the SSA, told S.H.A.N. the attack was led by a special force commanded by Captain Hsai Liet. 1 drug runner was captured dead while two others escaped, leaving 280,000 yaba (methamphetamine) pills behind.
The SSA, during its annual meeting last month had resolved to continue with its fight against drugs.
Its anti narcotics campaign in the past had "exposed" Burmese commanders' involvement in the drug trade and soured the relations between Bangkok and Rangoon.
