A squad of police who visited the Sino-Burma border village of Kunhai in Namkham township was fired upon by some unknown armed men at 10:00. Three policemen were hit, said S.H.A.N. source.
An 80-men strong Burma Army force under the command of Col San Shwe Tha arrived on the scene in the afternoon to investigate who the culprits were.
Bad feelings between the villagers and Burmese authorities have been on the rise due to the failure of the latter to take effective action against drug peddlers despite enthusiastic cooperation by the former, he said.
"Every drug pusher we had informed the police was arrested only to be released a few days later," he said. "And each one of them continues selling drugs to our kids."
