An aging Shan porter was beaten to death by a Burma Army unit while carrying ammunitions to Burmese bases facing Thailand, said an escaped porter.

Awzayya, 56, of Pasak, Monghsat Township, one among 36 porters who were assigned to carry ammunitions for 80-stong company 4, IB 49 (Monghsat), was kicked and beaten to death 3 miles west of Doilang, Mae Ai District, Chiangmai Province on 13 February.

The company was commanded by Captain Aung Kyaw Htoo.

Males age between 18 and 57 are eligible for forced portering in Monghsat, according to sources.
