Shans Net Amphetamines Again
Ten days after capturing 400,000 amphetamines across Chiangrai the Shan resistance has netted another 84,000 from the junta commanders again across Chiangmai thereby fortifying their allegations against the junta of its involvement in drugs.
Maihoong from Mongton Township, Monghsat District, reported yesterday that two trucks transporting Burmese soldiers and militia were attacked by a unit from the Shan State Army's 727th Brigade at 08:00 on 23 December. The ambush took place near Nam Yom, Poongpakhem Tract, Mongton Township, only half kilometer distant from BP-1.
One truck belonged to Ko Maung Than, who used to be Mongton Township Registration Officer but now the Township Branch Postmaster. The other belonged to Ja-u, a militia chief. "There were Ko Maung Than in the first truck with two soldiers and two civilians, and 7 militiamen including Ja-u in the second one", said Maihoong. "Only two militiamen got away after being wounded".
Among the booty were 84,000 amphetamine tablets.
"The Shan must have been alerted in advance of their coming, because there were 5-6 motor vehicles that had already past their hidden positions but they did not touch", he said.
The two traders who were killed came from Langkho, he added, where the Pa-o militia in Pangtawi had an amphetamine factory.
SSA News reported earlier 5 killed and 3 wounded on the SPDC's side and 1 killed on its own side. The militia chief was also among those killed.
The attack was led by Lt. Ba Htun, an officer known for his intrepid exploits.
The captured drugs were turned over to the Thai authorities the following day, said Maihoong.
